For a kimchi-making lesson in Seoul, consider the English class at Museum Kimchikan in Insadong. Museum admission and a cooking class have different schedules, prices and booking conditions. This guide connects Kimchi! Basic’s timetable, total cost and cancellation deadline with a walk nearby. The September anniversary sessions have ended and are not currently bookable classes.

The museum class: price, language, who can join

Museum Kimchikan sits on floors four to six of the Insadong Maru building, two hundred metres up Insadong-gil from Jonggak Station. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:30, and admission is 5,000 won for adults, 3,000 for ages 8 to 18 and 2,000 for small children. The class to book is Kimchi! Basic: taught in English, sixty minutes, open to foreign and Korean visitors alike, with a minimum of four and a maximum of twenty-four people per session, at 35,000 won per person plus admission. A session with fewer than four total bookings will not run. If booking for two, confirm whether other bookings bring the session to its minimum. Available places do not guarantee that the class will run. What you make you take away, so plan for a jar in your luggage or a hotel fridge. The museum closes on Mondays, on 1 January and 25 December, and over the Seollal and Chuseok holidays — in 2026 the Chuseok closure was 24 to 26 September.

The free 40th-anniversary session, and the rule that bars you for six months

The free DIY Kimchi 101 sessions on September 29 and 30, 2026 have ended. These sessions are not currently bookable products. Check the museum programme page separately for any new sessions. For Kimchi! Basic, cancellation and changes to participant numbers close at 10:59 three days before the visit. The operator requires payment for the booked number thereafter and states that late cancellation leads to a six-month booking restriction. Children’s and free programmes have their own conditions; do not apply this rule to every class. Confirm arrival requirements and allergy arrangements for your booking.

When kimjang season starts, and where to see it at scale

Kimjang is a late-autumn tradition of making and sharing kimchi for winter. Treat the Seoul class and Gwangju festival as separate trips. The 33rd Gwangju Kimchi Festival is announced for 23–25 October 2026. Look up your actual train stations and times, then allow separately for travel to the venue. Choose a Tuesday–Friday class and remember that fewer than four total bookings means it will not run. You must take your kimchi away: check the supplied container, storage advice, airline rules and destination import rules. Before or after class, choose an Insadong tea house or Ssamziegil; do not assume adding Bukchon is a short walk from every starting point.

Ten stops around the class

These are nearby options for one or two stops before or after class, not a ten-stop morning including Jongmyo and Bukchon. Fit them around the class time and each place’s access conditions.

  1. Kimchi! Basic is an English class on Tuesday–Friday, 10:00–11:00 or 14:00–15:00. It lasts 60 minutes for 4–24 people and costs ₩35,000 plus admission, totalling ₩40,000 for an adult. Fewer than four bookings means the session is not held. The museum being open at weekends does not mean this class runs then.
  2. Insadong Maru (인사동마루) — the building itself — a crafts complex with a rooftop; the class kitchen is on the upper floors.
  3. Insadong-gil — browse brushes, hanji paper and tea. Check that day’s vehicle restrictions and individual shop hours.
  4. Ssamziegil — a craft and shopping complex at 44 Insadong-gil. Check the route from the museum entrance; ask about size, packaging and transport before buying ceramics.
  5. Tapgol Park (탑골공원) — at the foot of the street by Jonggak — a ten-tier pagoda under glass and the elderly regulars of Jongno.
  6. Jogyesa (조계사) — a temple visit west of Insadong-gil. Navigate from your actual starting point and follow worship and photography notices. Check menus, opening hours and purchase conditions separately at nearby temple-food businesses.
  7. Anguk Station lane (안국역) — the north end; Line 3 exit 6 is the museum's other approach, 300 m down the street.
  8. Bukchon Hanok Village (북촌한옥마을) — fifteen minutes uphill from Anguk; residents live here, so keep to the marked lanes 10:00–17:00. Bukchon guide.
  9. Jongmyo — the Joseon royal ancestral shrine and UNESCO World Heritage site needs separate travel and visiting time. Check Tuesday closure exceptions for public holidays, admission method and last entry on the official page.
  10. Kimjang prepares for winter in late autumn; timing varies by region, weather and household. The 33rd Gwangju Kimchi Festival is announced for 23–25 October 2026. A search-index peak is neither an event date nor a visitor count.

Check before you pay

Questions for planning this visit, not allegations against any business.

  • Confirm materials, take-home packaging and interpretation included in a class. Check changes and late-arrival terms; separately verify food storage and border-entry rules for take-home products.
  • Match the seller, venue address, date, party size, cancellation deadline and time zone on the confirmation. Save change/cancellation refund conditions and who handles them; an application receipt is not a confirmed booking.
