Seoul hanbok rentals 2026: palace admission rules and return planning

Before renting hanbok, check both the palace areas you want to visit and the clothing requirements. Free admission requires a jeogori and lower garment together; a durumagi coat alone or hanbok mixed with ordinary clothes does not qualify. You may choose hanbok regardless of gender, but Changdeokgung’s Secret Garden needs separate booking and payment. This guide covers suitable clothing, the admission fees you may actually save and a palace visit that fits your rental return time.
Clothing requirements and outfits that do not qualify
The guideline from the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center is built on one sentence: an upper garment and a lower garment, both. The upper garment is a jeogori, and it has to keep the wrapped, overlapping collar — the tie ribbon itself is optional, so a modern jeogori that fastens some other way still counts. Skirts may use different wrap or fastening styles; trousers must follow the form of traditional sapok baji. Everyday hanbok and contemporary designs count as hanbok. The guidelines list the following examples of outfits that do not qualify. First, a durumagi coat thrown over ordinary clothes: the coat alone is not hanbok. Second, half-and-half outfits — jeans under a jeogori, or a t-shirt over hanbok trousers. Third, garments that only look the part: an everyday-hanbok top cut like a t-shirt, or a one-piece dress with no separate jeogori. The guideline also asks for dress befitting the palaces and rules out excessive exposure. If an outfit is unclear, ask the palace visitor office before renting it. One thing it deliberately does not say is who may wear what: the gender clause was deleted with effect from 1 July 2019, so a man in a hanbok skirt and a woman in hanbok trousers both qualify.
What the free entry is actually worth
The hanbok waiver covers ordinary admission when the official clothing requirements are met. Standard adult fees are ₩3,000 each at Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung and ₩1,000 each at Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung. Visitors already eligible for free entry by age or nationality do not save these fees again. Choose hanbok for the experience and photographs, comparing the actual rental price, return time and extras. Changdeokgung’s Secret Garden requires its own timed admission, normally ₩5,000 for an adult. Gyeongbokgung’s autumn 2026 night viewing ended on 2 October; its past hanbok benefit does not provide night entry now.
Planning your visit
For a first visit, choose one palace and fit the rental period to its opening and last-entry times. Light and crowds vary with weather and events; opening time does not guarantee empty courtyards. Compare Gyeongbokgung’s large halls, Changdeokgung’s palace and separately booked garden, Changgyeonggung’s pond and glasshouse, and Deoksugung’s evening access. Wear familiar comfortable shoes and mind long hems on stairs and gravel. Check deposits, late-return charges, accessories and luggage storage before renting. The 24–27 September Chuseok free-entry period has ended. If adding Bukchon or Samcheong-dong, navigate from your actual palace exit and observe Bukchon’s 10:00–17:00 red-zone tourism hours.
Ten places worth wearing it
These are options around a hanbok rental and palace visit, not an all-in-one morning route. Choose one palace and a nearby stretch, returning before your rental deadline.
- Gwanghwamun Gate — A starting point for photographs of the gate and square. Keep the guard ceremony and pedestrian routes clear.
- Geunjeongjeon at Gyeongbokgung — frame the throne hall and stone court without blocking visitor paths. Groups and events can bring crowds even at opening; an empty courtyard is not guaranteed.
- Hyangwonjeong — Frame the pond and island pavilion from the open visitor path. Judge the light and crowds on the day.
- National Folk Museum — free museum admission is separate from a Gyeongbokgung ticket. Permanent Exhibition Hall 1 is closed 30 September–21 December 2026. Check its entrance at 37 Samcheong-ro and museum hours.
- Bukchon Hanok Village — check a walking route from your actual palace exit. Red-zone residential tourism is limited to 10:00–17:00; keep your voice down. Bukchon guide.
- Samcheong-dong-gil — An optional walk past galleries and cafés east of Gyeongbokgung. Autumn colour depends on the weather; keep your rental return time in mind.
- Changdeokgung — hanbok waives ordinary palace admission, not the separately booked and charged Secret Garden. Check Monday closure and holiday exceptions, and your actual route to Donhwamun Gate. Changdeokgung guide.
- Changgyeonggung's Chundangji (창경궁 춘당지) — the pond and the 1909 glasshouse, 1,000 won and open to 21:00 — an option for a dusk visit; the greenhouse has seasonal closing times. Changgyeonggung guide.
- Jongmyo — A royal ritual site. Hanbok admission benefits do not determine the visiting format: check self-guided versus guided visiting days and last entry, and keep quiet.
- Deoksugung stone wall (덕수궁 돌담길) — the ginkgo-lined wall by City Hall and a palace open to 21:00 for 1,000 won — the evening option. Deoksugung guide.

Rules, fees & where to wear it
| What counts | Wear a jeogori with a skirt or trousers. The jeogori must retain the overlapping collar; the tie ribbon is optional. The same clothing rules apply to Korean and foreign visitors. |
|---|---|
| What does not | A durumagi coat worn alone. Jeans with a jeogori. A t-shirt with hanbok trousers. An everyday-hanbok top cut like a t-shirt. A one-piece dress with no separate jeogori. The guideline also asks for dress befitting the palaces and excludes excessive exposure. |
| Where it works & what it saves | The hanbok waiver applies to ordinary admission when the official clothing requirements are met. Standard adult prices are ₩3,000 each for Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, and ₩1,000 each for Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung. Visitors already eligible for free entry by age or nationality do not save those fees again. The Secret Garden requires separate booking and payment; compare the rental shop’s actual quote. Gyeongbokgung’s autumn 2026 night viewing ended on 2 October. Its past hanbok benefit is not a currently available night programme. A future session requires a new official announcement. |
| Free for everyone | During Chuseok (24–27 September 2026) the four palaces, Jongmyo and the royal tombs were free to all visitors regardless of clothing; that period has ended. Free-admission ages differ by nationality year-round — check the official table before paying. |
Check the clothing rules, choose one palace and leave time to enjoy it. Compare the rental price, extras and return deadline; treat free entry as a bonus to the experience.
Check before you pay
Questions for planning this visit, not allegations against any business.
- Before renting, confirm return time, extension increments, damage/loss charges and deposit return terms. Obtain a total for the accessories, styling or photos you want and check the item’s condition together at pickup.
- Check general admission, special visits and timed programs separately. Do not assume hanbok rental or a guide is included; use the official ticket or reservation channel to verify each option.

Quick answers
Do I really get into Korean palaces free wearing hanbok?
Hanbok meeting the official clothing rules qualifies Korean and foreign visitors for free ordinary admission at Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung, Changgyeonggung, Jongmyo and the Joseon royal tombs. Wear a jeogori with a skirt or trousers. Check separate booking and charges for the Secret Garden and special programmes.
What exactly counts as hanbok for free entry?
Wear a jeogori with a skirt or trousers. The jeogori must retain the overlapping collar; the tie ribbon is optional. Skirt fastening styles are unrestricted, but trousers must follow the traditional sapok baji form. Everyday and modern hanbok can qualify; the gender clause was removed on 1 July 2019. The same clothing rules apply to Korean and foreign visitors.
Can men wear a hanbok skirt, or women hanbok trousers?
Yes. The gender clause was removed from the guideline with effect from 1 July 2019, so cross-wearing qualifies for free admission as long as the basic upper-plus-lower composition is there.
How much does the free entry actually save me?
The hanbok waiver applies to ordinary admission when the official clothing requirements are met.
How much does hanbok rental cost in Seoul?
Shops price by duration, commonly a few hours or a full day, with hair styling and accessories charged separately. This guide does not quote figures because there is no official price list, rates differ by shop and season, and any number would go stale quickly. Check the shop's own page for the day you plan to go.
Is hanbok still worth it now that Chuseok 2026 is over?
