Gyeongbokgung Palace Guide 2026: Hours, Tickets, Hanbok Admission & Getting There

Choose a self-guided walk or a scheduled language tour before deciding when to arrive at Gyeongbokgung. In November–December, last admission is 16:00 and closing is 17:00. Check Tuesday and substitute closures, then add either Seochon or Bukchon rather than both.

Plan around a scheduled language tour

The official Japanese tour runs at 10:00 and 14:30 on operating days and lasts about 1–1.5 hours. Meet outside the information office inside Heungnyemun Gate. Individuals in parties of fewer than 10 need no advance reservation; foreign groups of 10 or more must telephone the information office between one week and one day ahead. Late joining is not allowed: your subway arrival time is not your meeting time. Sessions and routes may change.

Our planning suggestion: for the 14:30 Japanese tour, eat and arrange admission before reaching the meeting point. Afterwards, take a break in one nearby neighbourhood; put a museum visit in the morning if it is a priority. For a self-guided visit in November–December, leave walking and queuing time rather than aiming to arrive at the 16:00 admission deadline.

630 years in three acts

Act one: built in 1395, three years after the Joseon dynasty was founded, as its main royal palace — a masterpiece of Confucian city planning aligned with Bugaksan mountain behind it. Act two: burned during the Japanese invasions of 1592 and not rebuilt until reconstruction began in 1865 and was completed in 1867. Act three: dismantled almost entirely during the Japanese colonial period, then painstakingly rebuilt from the 1990s — restoration continues today, which means the palace you visit is both a monument and a living workshop.

What to see (and when)

• The usual changing-of-the-guard times are 10:00 and 14:00, except Tuesdays. Allow time to find the public viewing area; arriving early does not reserve a front-row place. Check the day's operation because weather and special events can change it.
• Geunjeongjeon — the throne hall (our photo), a National Treasure, framed by mountain ridgelines.
• Gyeonghoeru Pavilion — the banquet hall floating on its lotus pond; best light in late afternoon.
• Hyangwonjeong — a two-storey pavilion on an island in the pond. View the pavilion, water and trees from open paths without crossing barriers.
• National Palace Museum & National Folk Museum — Plan museum entry separately from the palace visit. The Folk Museum is free but has separate access from the palace ticket; check its entrance at 37 Samcheong-ro. Permanent Exhibition Hall 1 is closed 30 September–21 December 2026.

Choosing a meal

A meal break near the attractions; compare menus, opening hours and the return route before choosing a restaurant.

• Tosokchon Samgyetang (토속촌삼계탕) — For samgyetang, check the portion and your party’s ingredient restrictions. If there is a lunch queue, work backwards from palace last admission.
• La Farina (라파리나) — If choosing a bagel as a light meal, check your preferred variety and takeaway options; a photograph does not guarantee stock that day.
• Archivist Coffee (아키비스트) — Choose seated coffee or takeaway. A quiet or vacant seat is not guaranteed; move the break after your walk if the wait is long.
• Byeotanjip (뼈탄집) — For grilled meat, check minimum orders and weight per portion before budgeting. If returning to the palace after dinner, check last admission and re-entry rules separately.

Make it a day

Suggested itinerary: centre the day on Gyeongbokgung and the guard ceremony, choose one museum, then add either Seochon/Tongin Market or Bukchon/Insadong after lunch. Do not pack every stop into one day; check your actual exit and closure days. Tourism in Bukchon’s red zone is limited to 10:00–17:00.
