Insadong guide: tea, crafts, Museum Kimchikan and workshop bookings

Published · Updated · 7 min read ·

Choose a gallery, a craft purchase or a tea stop as the center of your Insadong walk. Shops and guided tours keep different schedules; a street remaining accessible does not mean its tea houses stay open late.

Compare crafts before buying

For crafts, compare material, maker, price and delivery time before paying. A handmade label does not mean the seller made the item. At Ssamziegil, use the ramps to browse workshops and small shops; verify the current tenant and hours if one particular shop is your reason for visiting. Keep bulky purchases until the end of the walk.

Tea houses: the actual point

For a tea-house stop, choose whether you want a hot drink, a cold fruit-based drink or a quiet seated break, then compare the menu before ordering. Ask whether sweets are included or charged separately; service and minimum orders differ by shop. A suggested walk is Anguk → Ssamziegil browsing → tea break, with a gallery only if its hours fit. Buy bulky crafts after the walk rather than carrying them through narrow shops.

Ssamziegil hoursSsamziegil's official hours are 10:30–20:30; closed on Seollal and Chuseok day. Individual shops and tea houses can have different hours. In 2026 Chuseok day was 25 September.

Guided tour or independent walk?

Start a guided-tour booking at Seoul's official walking-tour page. Select Insadong, your date and the language actually offered, and read the meeting point on the reservation. Do not assume an evening departure exists every day. A self-guided street walk is a separate choice; ask each gallery and tea house for its own closing time.

Seoul Guided Walking Tour

Ssamziegil is at 44 Insadong-gil, Jongno-gu. Its official directions give about three minutes on foot from Anguk exit 6. The street's northern entrance and the Ssamziegil building are different meeting points; share the name and address.

A rainy-day option: Museum Kimchikan with Japanese audio

Museum Kimchikan (뮤지엄김치간) is at 서울 종로구 인사동길 35-4, 인사동마루 본관 4–6층, floors 4–6 of the Insadong Maru main building. Take the lift to reception on 4F. This is a different building from Ssamziegil. Save the official directions and map to find the entrance.

Exhibitions open Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:30. Closed Mondays, January 1, the three-day Seollal and Chuseok holidays, and December 25. Standard individual admission for adults aged 19+ is 5,000 won; free-entry groups including ages 65+ need eligibility evidence. Individual exhibition visits need no reservation; groups of 10+ should enquire first. Official admission and closures

The free Japanese audio guide uses a QR code on your own phone; bring earphones. This does not mean Japanese live commentary or a Japanese-language cooking class. Our suggested order for a day with less shopping is exhibition → tea stop → crafts.

Booking kimchi-making: English, 60 minutes, admission extra

2026 Kimchi! Basic for individuals is taught in English, Tuesday–Friday 10:00–11:00 or 14:00–15:00. It requires at least 4 participants and allows up to 24; an under-enrolled session will not run. Small parties should check whether their session will operate. The 35,000-won activity fee excludes admission: a standard adult pays 40,000 won in total. Exhibition-only admission at 5,000 won is a separate option.

Cancellation or party-size changes are due by 10:59 three days before the visit, Korea time (the same as Japan). After that, the museum requires payment for the reserved headcount and states that late cancellation prevents further bookings for six months. Confirm date, language, headcount and total before applying; an available calendar slot is not a confirmed booking.

If the class is full or cannot run, choose exhibition-only on an opening day. On a closure day, focus on crafts and tea, checking each shop's hours. For booking or unexpected-charge problems, see our free travel-help guide.

  • Distinguish walking or free areas from paid exhibitions, activities and food. If told a fee is mandatory, ask the venue information desk which service it covers before paying.
  • Before food is prepared, confirm whether the price is per plate, person or weight, minimum orders and extras. Match the menu to the order and confirm your party’s total. Keep an itemized receipt.
