For a short first visit, we suggest walking from Cheonggye Plaza towards Gwangtonggyo and leaving towards Jonggak or Euljiro. Check stream-level closures before descending; if stairs are difficult, identify a usable entrance or stay on the street-level pavement.

What the stream actually is

The modern restoration project covered 5.84 km and the stream reopened to the public on 1 October 2005 after the elevated road was removed. That project length should not be confused with the length of the entire watercourse. Begin at Cheonggye Plaza's Spring sculpture, then notice how bridges connect the lower walkway to different neighbourhoods. The museum farther east explains the covered-road era and restoration.

Separate a short walk from the eastern extension

Our suggested sequence: Cheonggye Plaza → Gwangtonggyo area → an exit towards Jonggak or Euljiro. Compare menus and prices at open restaurants after returning to street level. Dongdaemun and Cheonggyecheon Museum are separate eastern extensions; you do not need all of them in one short evening walk.

Places to consider along your route

Choose the stops that fit your time and interests. This is an editorial selection, not a measured ranking of local visits.

  1. Cheonggye Plaza and waterfall — Start by the Spring sculpture and waterfall. Year-end events and light-festival routes and hours require a separate announcement for the relevant year.
  2. Stepping stones — check water level, barriers and footing. Do not block crossings for photos; choose suitable bridges and access points with strollers or wheelchairs.
  3. Gwangtonggyo — Seoul Facilities Corporation explains that rebuilding it in stone in 1410 reused stones from Queen Sindeok’s former tomb. The carvings were not originally decorative work designed to face the stream; look for the reused masonry and restoration details.
  4. Jeongjo procession mural — A ceramic-tile mural depicting King Jeongjo's 1795 procession to Hwaseong. Pause to look at the figures and the arrangement of the procession.
  5. Supyogyo area — distinguish today’s Cheonggyecheon crossing from the historic stone bridge relocated to Jangchungdan Park. Check that year’s official announcement for any winter light-festival route and lighting hours.
  6. Cheonggyecheon Museum (청계천박물관) — Free;09:00–18:00, last entry 17:30, closed Mondays and 1 January. At 530 Cheonggyecheon-ro, beyond the short central walk.
  7. Running route (러닝 코스) — The outdoor walk is free. Check access barriers and weather before descending; heavy rain can close the stream paths. Museum hours are listed separately below, and festival lighting may have its own schedule.

Best timeChoose your walk around sunset, weather and the actual access point. Heavy rain or rising water can close the path; check warnings before descending. Weekday evenings are not guaranteed to be quiet.
Pair withFrom Cheonggye Plaza consider Deoksugung and Jeongdong; from Jonggak consider Insadong. DDP is a longer eastern extension. Compare the actual entrances and add meal and station-transfer time.

Check before you pay

Questions for planning this visit, not allegations against any business.

  • Distinguish walking or free areas from paid exhibitions, activities and food. If told a fee is mandatory, ask the venue information desk which service it covers before paying.
  • Before renting, confirm return time, extension increments, damage/loss charges and deposit return terms. Obtain a total for the accessories, styling or photos you want and check the item’s condition together at pickup.

Quick answers

Which part should I walk?

Our suggested sequence: Cheonggye Plaza → Gwangtonggyo area → an exit towards Jonggak or Euljiro. Compare menus and prices at open restaurants after returning to street level. Dongdaemun and Cheonggyecheon Museum are separate eastern extensions; you do not need all of them in one short evening walk.

Is the 2026 winter festival date confirmed here?

No. This guide does not provide a verified 2026 winter festival schedule. Check the organiser's notice for that year before booking around it; the ordinary stream walk is a separate outing.

When does Cheonggyecheon Museum open?

09:00–18:00, last admission 17:30; closed Mondays and 1 January. It is free and located at 530 Cheonggyecheon-ro. These are museum hours, not the outdoor stream's opening hours.
