Myeongdong Guide 2026: Cosmetics, Street Food, Tax Refunds & Packing
For shopping, compare the exact product size and refund conditions; for food, ask the price and payment method first. Leave a cathedral visit or Namsan extension optional so purchases and closing times do not dictate the whole evening.
At the checkout: immediate refund or departure paperwork?
Ordinary retail shopping and Duty Free purchases follow different procedures. Show your passport before paying and check eligibility, then ask whether tax is deducted immediately or a refund voucher is issued for later processing. Keep immediately refunded purchases separate so you do not apply for the same refund again at the airport.
- Before leaving the shop: for a later refund, obtain the refund voucher as well as the ordinary receipt. Check the goods, amount and refund method. Compare the final cost rather than budgeting for a full 10% of the displayed price back.
- At your hotel: keep goods for refund unopened and unused, accessible alongside your passport and vouchers. Pack cosmetics you will use tonight separately from purchases to take home.
- At the airport: ask about export confirmation before handing the relevant goods to your airline as checked baggage. Present them if the kiosk directs you to customs inspection. A downtown refund still requires export confirmation. Follow your departure terminal's process, then check the bag and complete any remaining refund steps.

Plan your luggage before buying toner
On international departures from Incheon, cabin liquids, gels and sprays must be in containers of 100ml or less, packed in one sealed transparent 1L bag per person. Container capacity counts, not what remains: a half-full 200ml toner bottle does not qualify. Before buying larger bottles, check your airline's checked-bag allowance and item restrictions. The K-beauty circuit
Compare cosmetics by the same product, volume and pack contents. Olive Young, brand stores and department-store duty-free shops have different ranges and refund procedures. Ask before using testers, and check expiry dates and exchange terms for opened products. Bring your passport, but do not assume every purchase qualifies for an immediate refund.
When the sun sets, the street eats
Myeongdong stall hours vary by vendor, weather and holidays. Plan for late afternoon or evening, but do not assume every cart opens at 16:00 or closes at 22:00. Check the displayed price and whether the vendor accepts cards or cash before ordering. Street-food choices can include tteokbokki, hotteok, tornado potatoes and strawberry mochi. For an indoor meal, compare the menu at Myeongdong Kyoja, known for kalguksu and mandu, with nearby restaurants. A side-lane address does not guarantee a lower price or shorter queue.
More than shopping: the quiet corners
Completed in 1898, Myeongdong Cathedral remains an active place of worship. Follow on-site directions for sightseeing and photography during Mass or other services. A Namsan extension needs separate time for reaching the cable-car station, queuing, the return trip and the observatory. Deal with bulky shopping bags before that outing.

Is Myeongdong Cathedral open to visitors?
Myeongdong Cathedral is an active place of worship, not a sightseeing venue with unrestricted access. Check the cathedral’s current service notices and follow staff directions before entering or taking photographs. If sightseeing access is restricted, view the exterior without blocking worshippers; do not treat a Mass time as a tourist visiting slot.
How does tax refund work when shopping in Myeongdong?
Ask before paying whether the refund is immediate or processed later. For a later refund, obtain a refund voucher and keep the unopened, unused goods, passport and voucher available. Follow airport export-confirmation instructions before checking the goods. Do not claim an immediately refunded purchase again. Eligibility and refund amounts depend on individual conditions.
Is Myeongdong worth it if I don't shop?
Yes: street food and the cathedral exterior can form a walk without shopping. For roughly two hours, keep the route within Myeongdong. The Namsan cable car and N Seoul Tower need additional travel and queueing time; do not fit all of them into the same two-hour allowance.
