Changgyeonggung: a ₩1,000 palace evening, the greenhouse and separate garden tickets

Changgyeonggung was established as a residence for dowager queens in 1483. Walk from Myeongjeongjeon through Chundangji to the 1909 Great Greenhouse to trace its palace and modern park history. Standard adult admission is ₩1,000; on opening days, grounds close at 21:00 with last entry at 20:00. Pair it with Changdeokgung by day or give Changgyeonggung its own evening. The connecting Hamyangmun gate and greenhouse interior have separate access limits.
Planning your visit
The autumn Royal Culture Festival (October 7–11) and Changgyeonggung Time Travel (October 9–10) have ended. The separate Mulbit Yeonhwa programme runs October 7–November 1, Wednesday–Sunday at 19:00, 19:30 and 20:00. Scene 2 at Daechundangji requires advance booking.
The palace that was a zoo
Changgyeonggung was established in 1483 under King Seongjong for three queens dowager. The 1762 confinement of Crown Prince Sado in a rice chest is also part of its history. The zoo and botanical garden opened to the public in 1909; the renaming to Changgyeongwon followed in 1911. The palace name was restored in 1983 and restoration work followed. Compare Myeongjeongjeon, rebuilt in 1616, with the 1909 Grand Greenhouse to see different periods in the grounds.
The greenhouse, the pond and the night
On opening days the palace operates 09:00–21:00, last entry 20:00. The Grand Greenhouse interior closes after 18:00 in December–February; do not plan on entering it on a winter night. A Monday public or substitute holiday shifts the closure to the next non-holiday.
Stops to choose for your route
In the order the walk unfolds from the gate, not by importance. Korean names to match the signs.
- Honghwamun and Okcheongyo — The main gate was rebuilt in 1616; the stone bridge dates to 1484. After entering, look for the protective monster-face carvings between the arches beneath the bridge.
- Myeongjeongjeon (명정전) — the throne hall of 1616 — the oldest surviving main hall of any Seoul palace, and unusually facing east, not south.
- Munjeongjeon and Sungmundang — Munjeongjeon was the king's working hall for reports and policy decisions, and the site where Crown Prince Sado was confined in a rice chest. Sungmundang is a separate building used for royal lectures and discussions of government and scholarship.
- Tongmyeongjeon (통명전) — the queen's quarters, the largest residential hall, with a small stone-lined lotus channel beside it.
- Chundangji (춘당지) — the two-part pond the colonial garden left; the maple reflections here are central Seoul's autumn photograph.
- Grand Greenhouse — The white glasshouse built in 1909 is included in palace admission. Identify plants using the labels on site, and note the earlier interior closing time in winter.
- Flowerbeds around the greenhouse — Explore the garden alongside the glasshouse exterior. Planting and blooms vary by season.
- Punggidae (풍기대) — the 18th-century stone wind-gauge pillar on the rise above the pond — a small Joseon science object most walk past.
- Gwancheondae (관천대) — a stone astronomical observation platform dating to 1688, designated a Treasure, not a National Treasure.
- Hamyangmun — The connecting gate to Changdeokgung. Check admission to both palaces and the gate’s transfer cutoff separately. Changdeokgung’s Secret Garden requires its own booking and ticket.

Getting there, hours & the fee window

The palace parking lot is listed as temporarily closed from 5 January 2025 through 31 December 2026 for construction and excavation vehicle safety; do not plan on parking inside. |

| Hours & tickets | 09:00–21:00 all year, last entry 20:00, closed Mondays. Adults 1,000 KRW; free in hanbok; free for Korean nationals aged 24 and under or 65 and over, and for foreign visitors aged 18 and under or 65 and over (bring ID). The Grand Greenhouse is free with palace entry. Admission was free for everyone during Chuseok (September 24–27, 2026); normal fees apply again. When Monday is a public or substitute holiday, closure moves to the next non-holiday. |
| Best time | Plan ordinary sightseeing separately from Mulbit Yeonhwa: 7 October–1 November, Wednesday–Sunday at 19:00, 19:30 and 20:00. Scene 2 at Daechundangji requires advance booking. |
| Pair with | Check separate entry conditions for Changdeokgung via Hamyangmun. The ₩6,000 combined pass allows one visit to each of four palaces and Jongmyo within six months of purchase; it excludes Changdeokgung’s Secret Garden, which needs its own ticket and timed booking. Add either Bukchon/Insadong or Daehangno by Hyehwa, calculating the transfer separately. |
Combine the palace halls by day with an evening pond walk. If your priority is the greenhouse interior or crossing Hamyangmun, build the visit around that facility’s closing time.
