Seochon is the neighbourhood west of Gyeongbokgung Palace. For a first visit, build the afternoon around a market lunch and a few lanes rather than a long checklist of cafés. Start at Gyeongbokgung Station, eat while the lunchbox service is operating, then choose a short café walk or a longer uphill route.
A Seochon walking route from Gyeongbokgung Station
This is a self-guided route suggestion. The time blocks include stops and are not measured door-to-door walking times.
- Station to market: allow 15–25 minutes. From Line 3, exit 2, head along Jahamun-ro toward Tongin Market. Save 통인시장 in your map app. Visit Seoul gives the market address as 18 Jahamun-ro 15-gil and the distance from the exit as 515 m.
- Lunch: allow 45–60 minutes. Check whether the coin-lunch café is operating before buying tokens. If it is closed, choose a stall taking ordinary payment and continue your walk.
- Side streets and a café: allow 45–60 minutes. Return through the lanes around the market and Jahamun-ro. Choose an open café from its current menu and posted entry conditions, rather than depending on a particular shop being open.
- Optional valley extension: add 45–60 minutes or more. Follow current map directions toward Suseongdong Valley (수성동계곡). This adds an uphill section; skip it if you want a gentler afternoon or have a timed reservation.
If you are visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace Guide 2026: Hours, Tickets, Changing of the Guard & Night Opening first, use an open public exit and navigate back toward the station and Jahamun-ro. Do not assume that every palace gate is available as a shortcut.
How the Tongin Market coin lunch works
Temporary arrangements during customer-centre renovation. Tongin Market’s official 1 October notice gives a planned customer-centre renovation period of 29 September 2026–30 January 2027. Coins are sold at the pop-up store (delivery centre) across from the usual customer centre, along the passage towards Gyeongbokgung Station. Dining is at outdoor tables near the traditional pavilion. Follow on-site signs: the planned completion date and daily service may change. For rain or cold, consider an open restaurant accepting ordinary payment instead of an outdoor meal. - Check that day’s coin availability and bundle price at the pop-up store (delivery centre) across from the usual customer centre.
- Get your tokens and tray, then look for participating stalls. Tokens are not accepted by every shop.
- Ask how many tokens a serving costs before ordering. Spread your choices across a few dishes rather than filling the tray at the first stop.
- Use the designated eating area as directed, then return or dispose of the tray according to the café's instructions.
Oil-fried rice cakes, gireum tteokbokki (기름떡볶이), are one option to look for. Ask about ingredients if you have dietary restrictions. This guide does not promise that a set token amount will cover every visitor's lunch; prices and portions depend on what you choose.
The official Visit Seoul listing explains the token scheme. Carry an ordinary payment method too, for non-participating stalls and cafés.
Market opening, coin sales and seating hours differ
An open market does not guarantee that coins are still on sale. Visit Seoul’s English listing, edited September 10, 2026, gives the lunchbox café window as 11:00–15:00 and 11:00–16:00 on weekends. The city’s 2025 article identifies these as token-sales cutoffs, with seating open one hour later.
The lunchbox café’s regular closures are Tuesdays and the third Sunday of each month. The café’s official channel notice dated May 7, 2024 announced a switch from Monday to Tuesday closures starting June 1. The channel’s operating-hours panel checked on October 24, 2026 also lists Tuesday and the third Sunday as closed. We prioritise the operator’s change notice and current panel over the Monday holiday field on English Visit Seoul. This is not a closure schedule for every market stall. Confirm temporary sales-point operation during renovation, date-specific changes and token-sale cutoffs before travelling. Official closure-change notice · Channel operating hours
Once opening is confirmed, we suggest arriving between 11:00 and 13:00 to leave a buffer, not as a guarantee of service. If you cannot confirm, build the visit around the market and lanes, with the coin lunch optional if it is operating.

Choose the afternoon that fits your day
- Food and cafés: keep the route to Tongin Market and the nearby lanes. This is the easier option after a long palace visit.
- More walking: add Suseongdong Valley. Check the weather and path conditions and leave enough time to return at your own pace.
- Another neighbourhood: compare Bukchon Hanok Village Guide 2026: Best Photo Spots, Hanbok Rental, Etiquette & Hours or Insadong guide: crafts, tea houses and choosing a walking tour. Treat them as extra stops with their own visiting rules, not as mandatory parts of a short Seochon loop.
For a first afternoon in Seoul, we suggest the first option. One market, one café and a little unplanned walking leave room for discovering a place that is open and appealing when you arrive.
Walking through a residential neighbourhood
Keep gates and narrow pavements clear, lower your voice near homes and ask before photographing inside a shop. A hanok courtyard is not automatically public. For a step-free route, use current station lift information instead of assuming exit 2 has the access you need; the uphill extension is optional.
Use the palace-quarter collection to connect this walk with another visit, and the Korea Manual for broader trip planning.
Check before you pay
Questions for planning this visit, not allegations against any business.
- Distinguish walking or free areas from paid exhibitions, activities and food. If told a fee is mandatory, ask the venue information desk which service it covers before paying.
- Before food is prepared, confirm whether the price is per plate, person or weight, minimum orders and extras. Match the menu to the order and confirm your party’s total. Keep an itemized receipt.

Quick answers
Where is Seochon and which subway exit should I use?
Seochon is west of Gyeongbokgung Palace in central Seoul. Gyeongbokgung Station on Line 3, exit 2, is a convenient start; Visit Seoul places Tongin Market about 515 m from that exit.
When is the Tongin Market lunchbox café closed?
The café’s official channel lists Tuesdays and the third Sunday of each month. Regular closure changed from Monday to Tuesday on June 1, 2024; the operating-hours panel checked on 2026-10-24 agrees. Confirm temporary operation during renovation, individual stall closures and date-specific changes separately.
What time should I go for the coin lunch?
After confirming that service is operating that day, we suggest 11:00–13:00. Token sales and seating have different cutoffs, and an open market does not guarantee that coins are on sale. Pop-up store (delivery centre) opposite the customer centre; outdoor dining near the pavilion. Renovation planned for 2026-09-29–2027-01-30.
Can I pay with coins at every Tongin Market stall?
No. The lunchbox café tokens are for participating stalls. Check the sign or ask before ordering; carry another payment method for other shops.
How long does a Seochon walk take?
Allow about two to three hours for the market, nearby streets and a café as an editorial planning estimate. A palace visit or the uphill route toward Suseongdong Valley adds time.
Can I combine Seochon and Gyeongbokgung?
Yes. Visit the palace first if its opening hours fit, then use an open public gate and walk toward Jahamun-ro for lunch. Check both the palace and lunchbox-café closure days before choosing your date.
