Your First Seoul Jjimjilbang: What to Wear, What to Pay and When to Leave

Before choosing a Seoul jjimjilbang from its photographs, answer two questions: where can you spend time with your companion, and how many hours does admission cover? Bathing and relaxing follow different rules even within one building. This guide uses official visitor information; it is not a personal visit review.
The baths and the shared jjimjilbang floor are different
A typical jjimjilbang has separate men’s and women’s changing rooms and baths, plus shared resting areas where you wear the provided outfit. In the bathing area, you wash without clothes or a swimsuit; on the shared floor, wear the clothing specified by the venue. A “couples jjimjilbang” does not mean mixed bathing. Check that there is a shared area where you can meet after changing. Some venues, including Spa Lei, are women-only throughout.

Two Seoul options to compare
MEETORY suggests choosing by location and who is travelling. For a mixed-gender group planning time in eastern Seoul, start by checking Riverside Spa Land’s common hall. For a women-only visit around Sinsa, consider Spa Lei. This is not a ranking based on first-hand cleanliness or crowd assessments. Even if you are staying in Myeongdong, search the actual venue name and address when routing the trip.
| Venue | Published admission and hours | Seoul transport reference |
|---|---|---|
| Riverside Spa Land · 강변스파랜드 | Adult jjimjilbang: KRW 15,000 daytime / 17,000 nighttime. Day 05:00–20:00; night 20:00–05:00. Open 24 hours, year-round. | 45 Guuigangbyeon-ro, Gwangjin-gu. Line 2, Gangbyeon Exit 4; Visit Seoul lists about 400 m. |
| Spa Lei · 스파레이 · women only | Admission KRW 22,000. Open 24 hours; Visit Seoul lists Tuesday maintenance 09:00–10:00. | 5 Gangnam-daero 107-gil, Seocho-gu. Line 3, Sinsa Exit 5; Visit Seoul lists about 280 m. |
Riverside’s KRW 13,000 adult daytime sauna ticket is different from its KRW 15,000 daytime jjimjilbang ticket. Tell the counter you want the jjimjilbang if the shared floor is your goal. These are admission prices, not a budget including meals, a body scrub or massage. Before a scrub, ask its separate price, duration and queue arrangement. Do not assume every venue accepts every overseas card or offers booking without a Korean phone number.

Six steps from entry to checkout
- Before paying, confirm the ticket type, intended departure time, towels and outfit included. Follow the venue’s signs for the order of shoe storage and reception.
- Check your key number and store clothes and valuables in the assigned changing-room locker. Agree on a meeting point in the shared area before separating.
- If bathing, wash at the showers before entering a tub. Use soap and scrub only in the designated washing area, not in the soaking pool.
- Dry yourself and put on the jjimjilbang outfit before moving into shared areas. Keep the boundary between washing and dressed spaces clear.
- For a first visit, MEETORY suggests allowing roughly 2–3 hours in total. This is an itinerary suggestion, not time to spend in a hot room or an official stay limit. Do not make enduring heat a goal; allow breaks.
- Change back, settle any extras and return the key and outfit as instructed. Some venues charge purchases to a locker key, so treat it like a payment device. Aquafield, for example, says its shoe lockers do not open until checkout; that is an operator-specific procedure, not a rule to assume everywhere.

Open 24 hours does not mean unlimited overnight use
Riverside adds KRW 1,000 per hour after 15 hours for jjimjilbang admission, or after 6 hours for sauna use. Spa Lei adds KRW 2,000 per hour after 8 hours. Do not budget an overnight stay as admission alone without checking your departure time. Riverside does not allow re-entry after leaving; counter notices list individual corners’ breaks, closed days and bath-cleaning times.
Before resting overnight, ask whether a sleeping area is operating, who can use it, when you must leave and what extra charges apply. A 24-hour opening notice does not reserve a private bed or guarantee quiet sleep. If you need dependable rest before an early flight or an important day, we suggest arranging accommodation separately. Plan transport back to your lodging if you will leave late.

Couples, children and privacy
Riverside’s published policy requires under-19s to be accompanied by a legal guardian during 22:00–05:00; a consent letter alone is not accepted. Be ready for an ID check. It also bars boys aged 4 and over from the women’s baths. Tell the venue the child’s age and accompanying guardian, and confirm who can take the child through the changing and bathing areas. These are the named venue’s rules, not a claim that all venues have identical exceptions.
Do not take photographs in changing or bathing areas; we suggest leaving your phone in the locker. Aquafield also expressly prohibits filming in its locker rooms and sauna. Ask your selected venue ahead about tattoos, outfit sizes, wheelchair routes or a separate changing space. If communal nudity is uncomfortable, do not assume a swimsuit is the solution: ask whether you may use the dressed shared floor without bathing.

Questions to show the counter, and what to bring
Bring personal toiletries, fresh underwear and a way to pay, then verify which towels and outfit are supplied. A suitcase may not fit a locker, so ask separately about large luggage. Show the following Korean questions to the counter to clarify the important conditions.
- 찜질복과 수건이 포함돼 있나요? — Are the jjimjilbang outfit and towels included?
- 지금 들어가서 ___시에 나가면 총 얼마인가요? — What is the total if I enter now and leave at ___?
- 목욕하지 않고 공용 찜질방만 이용할 수 있나요? — May I use only the shared jjimjilbang area without bathing?
- 해외 카드로 결제할 수 있나요? — Can I pay with a card issued overseas?

Check before you pay
Questions for planning this visit, not allegations against any business.
- Check time limits, overnight, re-entry, treatment and food charges separately from admission. If using a spa instead of a hotel, confirm where and when you can rest and the exit deadline; do not assume a private room or bed.
- Match the seller, venue address, date, party size, cancellation deadline and time zone on the confirmation. Save change/cancellation refund conditions and who handles them; an application receipt is not a confirmed booking.

Quick answers
Can couples visit together?
At a venue with a mixed shared lounge, you can meet in jjimjilbang clothing, but baths and changing rooms are separate. Spa Lei is women-only.
Are all Seoul jjimjilbangs open 24 hours?
No. The two venues here list 24-hour opening, but Spa Lei has Tuesday 09:00–10:00 maintenance in Visit Seoul’s listing, and cleaning and individual facilities’ hours differ.
Does admission include a scrub and food?
The listed prices are admission. Check separate prices for scrubs, massage and meals, and include overtime charges if you exceed the base period.
