Gangneung (강릉) gives you several different trips: coffee overlooking Anmok Beach, a walk between Gyeongpo’s lake and sea, a meal of Chodang soft tofu, or time at Ojukheon. The practical choice is how many transfers you want. For a first visit without a car, MEETORY recommends choosing one coastal area and one cultural or food stop. Jumunjin to the north, Jeongdongjin to the south and the inland Anbandegi plateau are separate extensions; they should not all be treated as stops on one walking route.

Start with your reason for going

If coffee is the main purpose, start with Anmok and keep room in the day for cafés or festival activities. The official 18th Gangneung Coffee Festival website lists October 21–25, 2026, with Gangneung Coffee Street as the venue. Check its programme and transport notices before booking a specific activity; we have not confirmed additional venues or a festival shuttle for 2026. For a quieter itinerary, choose your dates for the beach or museum you want to see, without assuming that autumn or a lower search index guarantees fewer people. Search interest is not a count of visitors.

Coffee, beaches and a house on the banknotes

Gyeongpo combines a sandy beach and pine trees with a nearby lake and pavilion. The Korea Tourism Organization describes the beach as about 1.8 km long. Chodang is a useful lunch option for soft tofu traditionally set with seawater. At Ojukheon, the connection is to Shin Saimdang and her son Yi I, whose portraits appear on Korea’s 50,000- and 5,000-won notes. Choose the museum for that history, not for an unverified claim about the age of its bamboo. Opening and holiday conditions are in the table below.

A workable plan without a car

One day: select your return train first, then choose Anmok for coffee by the sea or Gyeongpo–Chodang for a lake/beach walk and tofu lunch. Add Ojukheon only if you can arrive before its 17:00 entry cut-off and still leave time to return to the station. These are editorial choices, not a timed excursion we have measured. Look up the exact café, entrance and station before starting; bus waiting time and the final walk belong in your transfer budget. If rain changes the plan, a café can take the place of the beach, while Ojukheon’s indoor displays remain subject to their holiday closures.

With one night: use the first day for your central coastal area, then choose just one outer destination for the second. The BTS photo stop in Hyangho-ri suits a northern Jumunjin trip; Jeongdongjin suits a southern coastal trip. If sunrise is the purpose, arrange the night’s accommodation and the pre-dawn ride before committing: a daytime train or bus connection does not establish that you can arrive before dawn. Anbandegi needs its own outward and return transport plan. Confirm your return connection before heading away from the centre, and leave the last segment of the day for collecting luggage and reaching Gangneung Station.

Ten places to choose from

These are alternatives grouped by purpose. Keep the Korean names for map searches; the list is not a promise that all ten fit into a weekend.

  1. Anmok Coffee Street (안목 커피거리) — Coffee beside Anmok Beach and the named venue for the 2026 coffee festival. Choose a café by its menu and opening hours, not a claim that every roaster is based here.
  2. Gyeongpo Beach (경포해변) — Sand and pine trees; KTO gives the beach length as about 1.8 km. Treat any water access or weather closure as separate from a promenade visit.
  3. Gyeongpo Lake & Gyeongpodae (경포호·경포대) — Choose a short lakeside walk or a pavilion visit. A complete lake circuit is optional; check your chosen walking or cycling route instead of relying on a fixed 4 km claim.
  4. Ojukheon (오죽헌) — Shin Saimdang and Yi I’s birthplace, with museum displays. Last entry is 17:00; on specified holidays the indoor rooms close even when Ojukheon opens.
  5. Chodang Sundubu Village (초당순두부마을) — Soft tofu as a lunch stop. Check whether the dish is plain, spicy or served with seafood, and ask the restaurant about ingredients if needed.
  6. Gangneung Jungang Market (강릉중앙시장) — A city-centre market option for food and shopping. Pick the actual shop you want and check its hours; the whole market does not share one restaurant schedule.
  7. Seongyojang (선교장) — A traditional house visit to consider as an alternative cultural stop. Check the property’s own admission conditions rather than applying Ojukheon’s ticket to it.
  8. Jeongdongjin (정동진) — A separate southern coastal outing. Choose the beach, station or another attraction explicitly: their access conditions are not interchangeable.
  9. Jumunjin & Hyangho Beach (주문진·향호해변) — A northern harbour and beach outing. The BTS stop in Hyangho-ri is a recreated photo installation, not the original filming prop or a transport stop to rely on.
  10. Anbandegi (안반데기) — A highland farming landscape about 1,100 m above sea level. Plan a separate trip and return ride; do not enter crops or assume a particular harvest or clear night sky.

Trains, admission and seasonal decisions

Getting thereFor KTX, search Seoul (서울) and Cheongnyangni (청량리) to Gangneung (강릉) for your actual travel date on Korail or Korail Talk. Departure station, journey time and price are service-specific; do not divide the two stations into weekday/weekend-only departures. Buy the return trip too and check the origin printed on the ticket. Local bus and taxi transfers are additional.
Hours & ticketsOjukheon–Municipal Museum: visit 09:00–18:00, enter by 17:00. Individual admission: adults ₩3,000; youth/military ₩2,000; children ₩1,000. Visitors aged 65+ enter free with ID. Parking is free. On January 1, Seollal and Chuseok day, Ojukheon opens but indoor exhibition rooms close. These terms do not apply to other houses, cafés or attractions.
Best timeCoffee Festival: October 21–25, 2026, Gangneung Coffee Street. For sunrise, check the exact date’s time and pre-dawn transport; there is no single 06:00–06:30 time covering October. Outdoor plans depend on weather and access notices. Café purchases, activities and transport need their own budgets.
Pair withFor a longer trip, compare the separate guides to Sokcho, Seoraksan and Nami Island, or browse beyond Seoul. Each needs its own transport plan; none is included in the short Gangneung route.

A successful short stay can be one beach, one meal and one stop you have time to enjoy. Add a distant photo spot only after the return transport is settled.

Quick answers

How do I get from Seoul to Gangneung?

Search Korail for your date using Seoul or Cheongnyangni as the origin and Gangneung as the destination. Check the departure station, duration and return service on the actual booking; the stations are not divided into weekday-only and weekend-only origins. Allow extra time for travel from Gangneung Station to your first stop.

When is the Gangneung Coffee Festival 2026?

The official website lists the 18th festival for October 21–25, 2026 at Gangneung Coffee Street. Check its programme and transport notices for specific activities. Information: 033-647-6802. Additional 2026 venues and shuttle arrangements are not confirmed here.

What are Ojukheon's hours and admission?

Visit 09:00–18:00 and enter by 17:00. Individual tickets are ₩3,000 adult, ₩2,000 youth/military and ₩1,000 child; ages 65+ free with ID. Parking is free. On January 1, Seollal and Chuseok day only Ojukheon opens; indoor exhibition rooms close.

What is Gangneung famous for?

Anmok’s coffee street, Gyeongpo Beach and Lake, Ojukheon, Chodang soft tofu and Jeongdongjin’s coastal scenery offer different reasons to visit. Pick a pair that fits your time and transport instead of trying to cover the entire coast in one day.

Is Gangneung worth visiting in autumn?

It suits a coffee and coastal-walk trip, and the 2026 coffee festival is scheduled for October 21–25. Weather, access and train availability still need checking. This guide does not promise empty beaches, clear sunrises or a fixed harvest period.

Where is the BTS bus stop near Gangneung?

In Hyangho-ri, Jumunjin-eup, in the northern part of Gangneung. KTO explains that the filming prop was removed and a photo installation was later recreated. Search for BTS 버스정류장 and plan the return connection; it is not simply the next stop after southern Jeongdongjin.
