At Suncheon Bay, distinguish a reed-boardwalk visit from the uphill route to Yongsan Observatory. The observatory overlooks the S-shaped channel and reed beds; the National Garden is a separate area about 7 km away. A normal admission ticket covers both on the same day, but transport and the return journey still need planning. For sunset, decide how to get back to the entrance and your accommodation after dark before setting out.

2026 Reed Festival ended: plan an ordinary wetland visit

The announced dates of the 27th Suncheon Bay Reed Festival (24–25 October 2026) have ended. No extension notice was found in the official announcement or notice board checked on October 26. Do not plan the festival activities, concerts or booths as current events; plan the reed paths or viewpoint under ordinary wetland admission conditions.

Late October to mid-November is a seasonal planning window for reed scenery. The festival has ended; ordinary wetland visits are separate. Check admission and return transport for your date. Reed colour and hooded-crane sightings are not guaranteed.

Past festival activities and meeting points

The following is a record of October 24–25, 2026, based on the official October 16 notice and the application form checked on October 24. It is not a current application or payment guide. Applications had a deadline of October 23; the October 25 rice session was also marked closed when checked on October 24. An old form remaining accessible does not establish new places or a future edition.

The published activity fee was ₩10,000 per person: advance bank transfer for the three walks, and payment on site after advance application for rice harvesting. Inclusion of wetland admission, overseas phone/payment support and foreign-language guiding were not verified. Do not transfer these conditions to a future event.

  • Daedae village walk: 24 October, 14:00–16:00 (20 people)
  • tidal-flat and migratory-bird walk: 24 October, 08:00–10:00 (20)
  • conservation-history walk: 25 October, 10:00–13:00 (20)
  • rice harvesting: 24 and 25 October, 10:00–12:00 (advertised capacity: 15). All four activities required advance application.

The published meeting instructions were 07:30 for the tidal-flat/bird walk and 09:30 for the conservation-history walk at Suncheon Bay Garden Market (생태배움길 21), followed by bus travel. The village walk meeting point was 대대3길 7; rice harvesting met at Suncheon Bay History Museum (순천만길 513-25). Music was advertised on both days at 14:00–17:00 on the lawn in front of Daedae Port, with activity booths at 10:00–17:00 beside Mujingyo Bridge. These are past festival arrangements.

What Suncheon Bay is: an S-curve, a reed bed and a crane roost

Across Mujin Bridge, the reed boardwalk leads toward Yongsan Observatory. Treat the flat reed walk and the uphill viewpoint as separate stages, budgeting for your pace and the return. The two-storey observatory reopened in July 2025 and overlooks the S-shaped channel and reeds. Plan to descend before closing and lights-out after sunset. Winter bird sightings depend on the season and birds' movements; keep your distance in designated viewing areas. Upstream, the National Garden hosted the 2013 and 2023 garden expos and has themed gardens and a lake; check Dongcheon boat operations separately. A regular ticket covers the garden and wetland on the same day, but a National Garden evening ticket excludes the wetland. See the table below for fares and ticket-office cutoffs.

Build the day around your return journey

Before combining Suncheon’s National Garden and wetland on a day trip, fit both ticket-office cutoffs around your return trains. Check Yongsan–Suncheon trains for your date in KORAIL and bus 66 against current stop information. For Yongsan Observatory, allow separately for the climb, descent and return before darkness. If transfers are tight, choose the garden or wetland rather than forcing both.

Ten things in and around the bay

In the order a day trip unfolds from Suncheon Station. Korean names to match the signs.

  1. Suncheon Bay National Garden (순천만국가정원) — the 2013/2023 garden-expo site upstream: themed gardens, a lake, the Dongcheon boat in season; on the same ticket as the wetland — do it in the morning.
  2. Skycube (스카이큐브) — A separately paid connection between Garden Station and Suncheon Bay Station. See the service and return cutoffs below.
  3. Mujin Bridge (무진교) — the wetland's entrance: ticket office, the boat pier and the start of the reed boardwalk.
  4. Reed field boardwalk (갈대밭 데크길) — the walk through the reeds — often taller than visitors; the timing of golden colour varies with conditions — toward the hill; the flats and glasswort open out on both sides.
  5. Yongsan Observatory — The two-storey viewing structure reopened in July 2025 and overlooks the S-shaped channel and reeds. Allow separately for climbing, descending and returning to the entrance; check lights and closing time after sunset. Bird sightings are not guaranteed.
  6. Glasswort beds (칠면초 군락) — the salt-marsh plant that turns the mudflat red in autumn, best seen from the deck and the boardwalk edges.
  7. Hooded crane roost (흑두루미 도래지) — Hooded-crane (Grus monacha) sightings depend on season, weather and bird locations. The previous winter’s figure of about 8,600 is not a count you can expect to see today. Use binoculars from designated observation areas; do not follow birds into fields or tidal flats. Check official booking availability before planning this year’s birdwatching or boat programmes.
  8. Ecological museum & observatory (자연생태관·천문대) — by the entrance: the wetland's story and, on programme nights, the stars — booked in advance.
  9. Suncheon Station (순천역) — Connect from your train to bus 66; use the transport advice below and your travel date’s timetable for the return.
  10. Yeosu — A separate harbour-city outing if staying longer. Check the actual train or bus from Suncheon and the onward journey to your accommodation rather than assuming a fixed 30-minute transfer.

SkyCube and Reed Train: extra fares and return cutoffs

SkyCube runs 4.6 km from Garden Station to Suncheon Bay Station, about 10 minutes one way, and costs extra to wetland admission. Standard adult/youth fares are 8,000 won return or 6,000 one way; children 6,000 return or 5,000 one way. Use it after entering the garden or wetland. The connecting Reed Train covers 1.2 km to Mujin Bridge in about 7 minutes, free for SkyCube passengers.

Closed Mondays, or the next weekday if Monday is a public holiday. In March–October, final departures are 18:00 from Garden Station and 18:30 from Suncheon Bay Station; the Reed Train leaves Mujin Bridge last at 18:20. In November–February these become 17:00,17:30 and 17:20 respectively. Do not assume service remains available after sunset; check closures, reservations and the return connection together.

Check before you pay

Questions for planning this visit, not allegations against any business.

  • Check the facilities, date, age band, re-entry and separately sold experiences or priority access. Before paying, verify whether a QR needs exchanging, the collection deadline and identification requirements.
  • Check how operator or weather cancellations differ from cancellation by you. A cancelled activity does not automatically refund separately booked trains or hotels. Keep a changeable return option.
