Plan Naejangsan’s valley walk linking Uhwajeong, Iljumun and Naejangsa separately from a ridge hike. Arrival at Jeongeup Station still leaves a transfer to the park. For a foliage visit, make the valley your main plan and choose the cable car after checking that day’s operation and queue.

Separate the 2026 forecast from observed foliage

VISITKOREA’s 2026 foliage forecast, credited to Weatheri, predicts peak colour at Seoraksan on October 25, Bukhansan on November 4 and Naejangsan on November 11. These are weather-dependent forecasts, not observations or a guarantee for your booking date. It does not specify individual peak dates for Seoul streets, palaces or Nami Island.

What Naejangsan is: a horseshoe of peaks and a tunnel of maples

Naejangsan spans Jeongeup and Sunchang in Jeonbuk and Jangseong in Jeonnam. On the Jeongeup side, locate Uhwajeong pond, the lower cable-car station, Iljumun, the maple tunnel and Naejangsa on your map. Colour varies each year; a particular week does not guarantee a red canopy. VISITKOREA describes a relatively level 3.6 km nature-observation trail, which is distinct from the ridge routes and does not establish step-free access throughout. Treat Seoraebong or a traverse towards Baegyangsa as a separate hike. The cable car offers an upper viewpoint option, but queues and walking beyond the upper station still need time.

Planning your visit

Our suggested plan makes Uhwajeong and the walk towards Naejangsa the core, with the cable car optional. Choose your return train first and allow separately for bus waits, road congestion and a meal. Avoid adding a long ridge hike or Baegyangsa to the same day. A weekday does not guarantee a short queue or an empty bus.

Ten places in and around the valley

In the order a day unfolds from the bus stop. Korean names to match the signs.

  1. Naejangsan bus stop & tourist village (내장산 버스정류장·집단시설지구) — the valley mouth: bus 171 from Jeongeup, car parks, restaurants and the start of the walk.
  2. Uhwajeong (우화정) — the pavilion in the pond at the park entrance — the classic reflection photograph, best in early light.
  3. Lower cable-car station — check same-day tickets and queues; walking to the viewpoint is additional.
  4. Cable-car lookout — allow a separate walk from the upper station. Check the path, steps, weather and last descent; visibility and foliage colour vary by date.
  5. Iljumun gate (일주문) — the temple's outer gate and the start of the maple tunnel.
  6. Maple tunnel (단풍터널) — the corridor of old maples between the gate and the temple — red overhead, red underfoot, red in the stream.
  7. Naejangsa temple (내장사) — the temple at the bottom of the bowl, rebuilt several times, with the peaks all round; daylight hours.
  8. Nature-observation trail — a relatively level 3.6 km option, distinct from ridge hiking; ask the park about steps and surfaces.
  9. Seoraebong ridge (서래봉) — the saw-toothed peak above the temple and the start of the nine-peak ridge circuit for hikers with a full day.
  10. Baegyangsa — a separate visit on the Jangseong side. Check its transport and current foliage rather than assuming a peak a few days after Naejangsa.

Check before you pay

Questions for planning this visit, not allegations against any business.

  • Check how operator or weather cancellations differ from cancellation by you. A cancelled activity does not automatically refund separately booked trains or hotels. Keep a changeable return option.
  • Secure the correct departure station and return service. For private transfers, record whether the quote is one-way or round-trip, passenger count, waiting charges and extra stops.
