National Museum of Korea Guide 2026: Free Entry, Hours, How to Get There, the Pensive Bodhisattvas & Museum Goods

Choose one collection before trying to cover the whole museum. Permanent galleries, special exhibitions and the Children's Museum have different admission or reservation conditions; reserve the necessary part and leave time to look slowly.
What the museum actually is (and the free part)
Checked 15 October 2026: Central Asia Gallery 307 is closed 12–22 October, with reopening scheduled for the 23rd. Buddhist Sculpture 301, Metal Crafts 302, Space_Sai, Buddhist Painting 203 and Wood and Lacquer Crafts 204 are closed from 6 July; Calligraphy/Painting 202-3 and 202-4 from 10 August, all through 28 January 2027. The notice lists 202-1/202-2, Celadon 303 and Buncheong/White Porcelain 304 as open. The Room of Quiet Contemplation is separate from Buddhist Sculpture 301.
Permanent galleries are free; special exhibitions may be free or paid. The Children’s Museum is free but requires a timed reservation and opens 09:30–17:20. Use the floor descriptions below to choose a subject, then exclude rooms covered by closure notices. Floor 1: prehistory to the Goryeo and Joseon kingdoms, plus the 'Path to History', the long central hall where the ten-story Gyeongcheonsa pagoda rises under the skylight. Floor 2: calligraphy and painting, and the donated collections, including the ancient Greek bronze helmet received in 1986 and later donated by 1936 Berlin Olympic marathon champion Sohn Kee-chung. Floor 3: sculpture and crafts — the Buddhist statues, the celadon, the white porcelain and the moon jar — and the World Cultures galleries.
A focused gallery visit and a break
Use the Room of Quiet Contemplation for a focused look at the two pensive bodhisattvas, then choose a different gallery from the current floor plan. A short visit need not cover every floor. Museum merchandise is sold separately; availability and prices depend on the product, so do not build an itinerary around a guaranteed stock item. The mirror pond and outdoor displays can provide a break, subject to the grounds' current opening rules. The earlier claim that BTS filmed its 2021 UN “Permission to Dance” performance here was incorrect and has been removed. The exhibition visit does not depend on a filming-location claim.
Places to consider along your route
Choose the stops that fit your time and interests. This is an editorial selection, not a measured ranking of local visits.
- Room of Quiet Contemplation (사유의 방) — Two gilt-bronze pensive bodhisattvas; allow time to look closely rather than treating this as a quick photo stop.
- Path to History & the Gyeongcheonsa pagoda (경천사지 십층석탑) — the ten-story marble pagoda of 1348 standing under the skylight of the central hall — the museum's photograph.
- The moon jar room (달항아리) — Compare porcelain forms and surfaces in the third-floor Buncheong and White Porcelain Gallery 304.
- Silla gold crown (신라 금관) — floor 1, Silla gallery: the gold crown and belt from the Gyeongju tombs, 5th–6th century.
- Sohn Kee-chung’s donated bronze helmet (손기정 청동 투구) — second-floor donated collections. The ancient Greek helmet was intended as a prize for the 1936 Berlin Olympic marathon champion, but was not actually delivered to Sohn until 1986. He donated it to the nation in 1994. Check the gallery’s opening status for your visit.
- Oegyujanggak Uigwe gallery (외규장각 의궤실) — the royal protocol books looted by France in 1866 and returned in 2011, in a dedicated room opened in 2024.
- Korean Empire gallery (대한제국실) — reopened July 2026: the short-lived empire of 1897–1910, its Western uniforms, coins and the emperor's coffee cups.
- MU:DS — separately purchased products inspired by the collection. If looking for pensive-bodhisattva or celadon designs, check the actual model, stock and price; leave time for the galleries first.
- Mirror Pond & Cheongjajeong pavilion (거울못·청자정) — The reflecting pond and pavilion outside the exhibition building; use the current grounds opening hours for an outdoor break.
- Outdoor gallery & Boshingak bell (야외전시장·보신각 동종) — the 1468 bell that once rang from Jongno, stone pagodas and lanterns in the garden — free, and open after the galleries close.

Check before you pay
Questions for planning this visit, not allegations against any business.
- Check the facilities, date, age band, re-entry and separately sold experiences or priority access. Before paying, verify whether a QR needs exchanging, the collection deadline and identification requirements.
- Match the seller, venue address, date, party size, cancellation deadline and time zone on the confirmation. Save change/cancellation refund conditions and who handles them; an application receipt is not a confirmed booking.
